Bill Miller was our interim Executive Director (ED) during the merger of Home Energy Magazine and Efficiency First with the Home Performance Coalition, later to become the Building Performance Association. During the approximately two-year transition, Bill kept us moving in the right direction through the loss of crucial staff and other challenges. He did this while working full time as a program manager in the Energy Technology Area at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.

Prior to this, Bill managed energy efficiency strategy, policy, and regulatory activities at Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E). Before joining PG&E, he spent 10 years in academia, engaged in teaching and research. He holds a B.S. degree in Economics from Stanford University and PhD in Economics from the University of Minnesota.

Bill M

Yeah, he’s a smart and capable guy. But Bill lifted our spirits with his sense of humor and tales from his very interesting life as a young man living in Berkeley in the 1960s and later during his professional career. Bill has frequented the Burning Man Festival held every year at the Black Rock Dessert in Nevada. It’s a place to explore community and art at the cutting edge of culture. It’s a testament to Bill’s grit, and curious, free spirt that he’s been a part of the festival. He’s been rock climbing with some of the early leaders of the rock-climbing culture. Recently, Bill told me “The happiest time of my life was when I was 14 years old and exploring Yosemite Valley with my family.”

No, this is not an obit! Bill is alive and well and popped into our office as I was writing this tribute. Even though he has been with us longer than he or any of us expected, we hope he stays a part of the magazine family.

Bill has nice things to say about us too. "What an awesome, bright, self-sacrificing team this is [Home Energy staff]. They are dedicated to producing a quality product, which is the reliable, factual information that helps people make houses better.” See what an affirming and intelligent man he is? All this with a sense of humor too.

Thanks Bill, from all of us at Home Energy.
