Utilities Support Efficient Homes
San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) is a regulated public utility that has been supplying natural gas and electric service to the San Diego region since 1881. SDG&E currently serves 3.4 million consumers in a service area that includes 125 communities from southern Orange County to the Mexican border. Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) has been delivering natural gas to its customers for more than 140 years. It is the nation’s largest natural gas distribution utility, serving a population of 20.1 million consumers in an area that encompasses approximately 20,000 square miles of diverse terrain throughout Central and Southern California. Both SDG&E and SoCalGas are regulated subsidiaries of Sempra Energy.
The two utilities have established a new program that offers education, financial support, and assistance in design and marketing to home builders. The Advanced Home Case Studies program supports home-building projects throughout Southern California that demonstrate advanced approaches to sustainability and energy efficiency.
The Advanced Home Case Studies program is structured around three main categories: energy, resources, and the environment. Within these categories, it focuses on
- sustainable site design;
- energy efficiency and pollution reduction;
- water efficiency and demand reduction;
- healthier indoor air quality; and
- preservation of natural resources through effective use of materials.
Through the program, SDG&E and SoCalGas work closely with the design community, builders, and related industries to incorporate the best practices of existing programs, mainstream and emerging technologies, and innovative construction techniques. Through their efforts, the utilities hope to accelerate market acceptance of new energy-sensitive design and green building practices that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and allow for cleaner air. This transformed market will help the utilities avoid building expensive peaker power plants, while continuing to provide excellent, reliable customer service.
David Blanke is the manager of new construction energy efficiency programs for Southern California Gas Company and San Diego Gas & Electric.
The Advanced Home Case Studies program is funded by California utility customers and is administered by SDG&E and SoCalGas under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission.
