Transitioning HVAC Companies to Whole House Performance Contractors

Existing contractors are well suited to take on the tasks of whole house energy upgrades and to advance large-scale energy efficiency in the residential market. To showcase this opportunity and to help the industry understand the transition process, Building America undertook research with a focus on HVAC companies, based on their market position of typically having an existing and ongoing relationship with homeowners through service and maintenance contracts.

This ongoing relationship places the HVAC contractor in an ideal position to deliver energy upgrades to whole communities or sections of communities. The HVAC contractor already works on and has extensive knowledge of one of the most technically complex systems in the house, eliminating the barrier of training for the HVAC system and reducing the time required to transition to delivering whole house energy upgrades on a wide scale. Energy upgrades may be supplemental to an HVAC contractor’s core business, a new guiding strategy for their company, or a sales tool to enable up-selling to a larger project in partnership with other qualified trade contractors. Providing contractors with new technical skills and a revised business approach is one way to achieve change on a large scale and to help the United States meet its goals regarding job creation and energy independence.
