Most houses built in Alaska today are the product of slight modifications to designs imported from milder climates. Such designs seldom perform well in Alaska.
The Haida House project came about because people care about housing in a small Indian village. Hydaburg is located on Prince of Wales Island in southeast Alaska, where many of the Haida Nation native peoples live. This is a culturally rich environment; however, the Haida housing situation is not so rich. To address chronic housing problems, Hydaburg Corporation built a local housing program to service their community housing needs.
